Theatre – but not as you know it. Discover how The Big Movement LIVE proved that the best seat in the house is a shared one.

The Big Movement Live

November 2025

“The Big Movement is testament to the power of community and connection”

— Dancer in The Big Movement LIVE

“With our The Big Movement programme, we want to bring men’s mental health into the spotlight in ways that are honest, visceral and connecting. If even one man left feeling less alone on Saturday night, we succeeded”

— Zoie Golding MBE, Artistic Director

Southampton’s Mayflower Studios became a vibrant hub of connection, inspiration and courage on Saturday 8 November as ZoieLogic Dance Theatre’s The Big Movement LIVE — a heartfelt and unflinching event centred on men’s mental health — took over the venue.

The beautiful collision of fun, creativity and dance was designed to be a space in which men were valued, heard and seen, and in which the audience could experience the power of dance.

Act 1 saw the foyer and café transformed into an immersive theatre experience filled with poetry, creativity and performance, offering attendees a space to reflect, connect… and dance together!

The vibrant Act 2 performance by an all-male cast — many of whom had never danced or performed on stage before — was more than theatre, it was a call to arms. They lifted the roof off with their bravery and brilliance.

The headline statistics from The Big movement live

First steps on the dance floor

There were 29 performers, aged 14 to 64, and 93% identify as male. A third of them already engage in our regular male dance classes

Blame it on the boogie

80 brave audience members took on our dancing task and their smiles told a thousand stories

Bold and brave new work

It’s more than dance: ZoieLogic commissioned nine artists for the event, including writers, poets, dance artists and filmmakers

2025
to 2026

“What an amazing, beautiful, special, inspirational experience!”

A ZOIELOGIC
YEAR IN REVIEW

This year has been an incredible year of energy and experimentation, with our local community spaces transformed into vibrant hubs where creativity and genuine connection took centre stage.

We focused on making everyone feel at home, whether they were stepping onto a stage for the first time or just popping in to see what all the excitement was about, with the vast majority of people walking away with brand-new friendships and a much stronger sense of pride in their local community.

“I am having such a good time practicing for The Austentatious Ball! Thank you for this, it is bringing joy to my summer”

Louise, on The Austentatious Ball

“ManMade has strengthened my ability to reflect on meaningful dance experiences, while also building my confidence in supporting boys to engage in dance“

Emma Godsall, Redbridge Community School on Manmade

The transformation we’ve seen in our young participants has been a massive highlight of the year. Over the months, they’ve developed into confident leaders who aren’t afraid to share their own ideas or take total control of the creative process. It’s been about so much more than just learning dance moves; it’s been about giving them a platform to speak up on ideas that matter to them.

As we’ve celebrated 25 years of ZoieLogic, the momentum behind the organisation is stronger than ever. We’ve successfully opened doors for people who never previously thought the arts were for them, with a huge influx of newcomers joining the family and discovering an interest in using dance to express themselves.

“I feel very connected and lighter after taking part and feel like I have achieved something today. Thank you!”

Chris on The Big Movement

Moving forward, our trajectory is all about keeping that energy high, keeping things fun and continuing to prove that when people from all different walks of life create together, the entire community feels the benefit.

Thank you to everyone who made this year an epic year!

— The ZoieLogic Team

Meet Paige, a Holyrood resident with a unique perspective on how we’re strengthening the community, one step
at a time

This is an conversation between our photographer Dev Place, and Holyrood resident Page during We Are Holyrood’s The Hub 2025.

Dev: How did taking part in Gabriel’s workshop change the way you feel about being physically active?

Page: At first, I was hesitant, I peeked in thinking I might just go do some crafts instead. But I got gently encouraged to join, and though I was a bit startled at first, I took a seat and gave it a go.

What I learned was to forget those thoughts like “Can I do this?” or “Should I be nervous?” The group was welcoming, upbeat, and the focus was on doing things at your own pace and style.

Yes, we followed certain movements, but there was room to make it your own. That freedom made it feel more like expression than exercise.

Even with a swollen foot, I was still able to take part in a way that felt right for me. It was low pressure but still engaging — I felt positive, fluid, even a bit free.

Normally I’d be quite stiff and guarded, but the way the workshop included everyone, regardless of ability or experience, helped break that down. We partnered up, followed each other’s movements, and worked together. It made me feel part of something,  like I mattered.

Dev: Can you share a moment during the Hub this year when you felt a sense of achievement or pride?

Page: There have been so many moments. Just having the Hub here is incredible – we need more spaces like this. It’s not about ticking boxes, it’s about relaxing, talking, playing, and genuinely connecting.

One moment that really stood out was during the film screening. We were given lyrics to sing along, but I couldn’t even sing, I was so overwhelmed.

It was powerful, not just because of the words, but the energy and action behind them. Seeing children from all kinds of backgrounds and stages in life performing together – it was an infusion of culture that really made it so powerful to me, to be honest.

Another moment was when I was having a walk in the morning and the local artist asked me if I wanted to write a note to a stranger. That simple act, writing something kind and hanging it on a tree – I thought, wow, that’s just amazing. It’s just communicating with someone that we’re probably connected to, but we don’t know.

I wrote: “If you conquer your mind, you conquer the world.” It reminded me that everything is in the mind, the result of every situation is dependent on how we absorb it. We could take it as a threat, we could take it as a challenge, we could take it as a positive, we could take it as a negative.

For me, it was just like, if you think you can do something, you can. Sometimes we forget the power of positivity, and a message like that can change someone’s entire day. It was really very lifting and empowering.

Dev: Why is it important that events like this happen at Holyrood?

Page: It’s essential, not just important. I grew up with youth clubs, scout groups, and community centres. Those spaces gave us belonging. Now, so many of them are disappearing, replaced with housing or lost altogether.

But this Hub isn’t just for kids,  it’s for everyone. When you see grandparents, parents, and children all taking part in the same activity, it reminds you of what community really means. Especially in an inner-city estate like this, which is so diverse and multicultural, these events bring colour and connection.

They offer a break from the stresses of life and bring people together in a way that feels natural and joyful. I hope it continues, because this is what community looks like — looking out for each other, sharing culture, and remembering that we’re not alone.

And in the end, culture is life.

An introduction from our new Chair of ZoieLogic, Ajay Parekh

For me, 2026 started with a unique opportunity. After a year serving as a Non-Executive Director, I was delighted to be asked if I would take up the Chair position for ZoieLogic.

Having sat through several board meetings, and attended a number of ZoieLogic events, during which I could see and hear the real differences the company makes in the lives of people of all ages, and especially young boys and men. I knew this was the role for me.

Zoie has created something that has magic in its DNA and which connects with adults and young people alike, and this is all run by a very small operational team surviving on a backbone of very strict funding core and project related funds, and from various arts and culture grants and NPO.

No doubt turning up to dance in Southampton’s Guildhall Square for the brilliant Austentatious Ball, celebrating 100 years of Jane Austen, and attending many of the social community projects across the year, helped to secure my trust in and respect for the whole ZoieLogic team, and fuelled my love of dancing and this sector.

I start the 2026-7 year with a few items on the agenda – the essence of the mission is about community, getting guys dancing, and mass participation. Alongside that, I look forward to supporting all the people, projects and participants in ZoieLogic’s orbit – a challenge into which I dive whole-heartedly.

intro

ZoieLogic Dance Theatre is recruiting a Marketing & Communications Manager to join our core team on a freelance basis.

We’re seeking an experienced, strategic and hands-on arts marketer to lead all marketing and external communications for ZoieLogic. We are a small yet dynamic team of creatives, strategists and change-makers, united by a bold mission: to transform lives through the power of movement and dance.

We thrive on collaboration, energy and pushing boundaries. Whether we’re in the studio, working in communities, or staging large-scale public performances, our team is hands-on, supportive and always innovating. We challenge the norms of who dance is for, where it happens and how people experience it. From getting more men dancing to activating public spaces with mass participation events, we believe anywhere can be a dance floor.

about the role

A natural organiser with excellent attention to detail and a flexible, proactive attitude, the Marketing & Communications Manager will head up ZoieLogic’s communications function, including marketing, public relations, community engagement, social media, content creation and corporate / stakeholder communications.

Informed by the organisation’s business strategy, you will lead and deliver all marketing and external communications activity to engage participants, audiences, media, partners and stakeholders – driving audience development, supporting annual income targets, strengthening partnerships and contributing to positive fundraising and Changemaker outcomes.

You will lead and work closely alongside our in-house Digital Creative and Social Media Coordinator, ensuring seamless operations across all communications and marketing outputs. You will shape and implement an integrated communications strategy that aligns brand, campaign and organisational messaging across platforms, maximising reach, impact and engagement.

Key responsibilities

Audience communications

  • Digital content and channel strategy
Devise and deliver a communications plan to maximise engagement across all platforms for brand and campaign activity. Oversee the Digital Creative and Social Media Coordinator to ensure high-quality content production, effective campaign delivery, and consistent, on-brand output across organic and paid digital channels.
  • Impactful storytelling and positioning
Capture and communicate the tangible impact of our work across arts, education and wellbeing programmes. Craft compelling, values-led messaging using ZoieLogic’s tone of voice to inspire audiences, participants, funders and partners.
  • Audience development and participation growth
Drive ticket sales, and grow participation and audience reach across two of our programme pillars — Get Guys Dancing and Hometown — while overseeing Mass Dance communications activity. Lead and grow our email marketing strategy to deepen engagement and conversion.
  • Touring campaigns
Devise and execute impactful touring campaigns that raise awareness locally and nationally, attract audiences in touring locations, and increase our industry profile.
  • Evaluation and reporting
Measure, analyse and report on campaign performance. Translate evaluation data into clear, compelling narratives for public, funder and sector audiences.

Stakeholder communications

  • Community and stakeholder relationship communications
Deepen relationships with existing communities, hyperlocal partners (e.g., Southampton’s Holyrood), schools and local stakeholders through strategic, consistent and values-led communication.
  • Changemaker and fundraising communications
Support income generation by communicating the impact and ambition of our Changemaker initiative, contributing to multi-year core funding success and broader fundraising outcomes.
  • National profile raising and sector influence
Lead communications positioning ZoieLogic at the forefront of boys and men’s dance practice, including supporting a national industry conversation in partnership with One Dance UK. This includes developing confident thought-leadership content and delivering a strategic PR approach.

Who we’re looking for

  • Significant experience in arts marketing and communications
  • A strategic thinker with strong organisational skills and attention to detail
  • A proactive self-starter who can take initiative, drive projects forward independently and thrive in a small, ambitious team
  • Excellent copywriting and storytelling ability
  • Strong digital marketing knowledge, including analytics and paid campaigns
  • Experience in audience development and engagement
  • Confidence leading small teams and collaborating across departments

Introduction from Zoie Golding MBE, Artistic Director and ben mcmahon, ZOieLogic chair

We are moving bigger, bolder, and stronger than ever! This year has been about breaking barriers, sparking movement, and proving that dance belongs to everyone.

From our Fuzzy Youth Companies, where we rebuilt and strengthened our cohorts, to ManMade, where 250 young men owned the stage, we’ve been pushing boundaries and championing change. Our work in Holyrood has flourished, with The Holyrood Hub driving a 77% surge in engagement, and our education programme has grown—training 7 new male facilitators to inspire and ignite the next generation.

And then, there’s The Big Movement. A game-changing three-year programme, bringing mass participation, powerful conversations, and transformative opportunities for men in movement. This is about rewriting the story – challenging perceptions, creating new pathways, and making space for more people to move, express, and belong.

But beyond the numbers, it’s the energy, the stories, the moments that matter. The young dancer who found his confidence. The community that came together through movement. The sheer joy of breaking down walls and making space for more people to dance.

— Zoie

This has been a year of incredible growth and impact for ZoieLogic. We have deepened our engagement with young people, expanded our educational reach, and strengthened our community, civic and business partnerships.

With the launch of The Big Movement, we are taking another bold step forward – championing more men into dance, challenging stereotypes, and promoting mental wellbeing through movement. This initiative, alongside our commitment to engaging young people and building strong partnerships, marks an exciting next chapter for ZoieLogic.

Continuing to challenge perceptions has shown that dance is truly for everyone, regardless of background, ability, or experience. As we approach our 25th year, we’re focused on sustainability, growth, and ensuring that the impact we’ve made continues to thrive for years to come. The future is exciting, and I’m incredibly proud to be part of this journey.

— Ben

“I feel energised for the rest of the day. I feel more connected to both familiar and new faces of men in my city. Feel valued and warm.”

Steering group member
for The Big Movement

Mass Dance is where we go big – really big. In acts of epic collaboration, we transform public spaces into joyful dance floors, bringing together people of all ages, backgrounds, and experiences to move as one. It’s about the buzz of the crowd, the beat of the music, and the shared energy that comes from creating something unforgettable together.

These large-scale events are moments of connection, celebration, and pure, unfiltered joy. Whether it’s 50 or 500 people, Mass Dance is a bold invitation to take part, take up space, and feel the power of unity through movement.

1. Laying the Groundwork for Cultural Shift

2024/25 was a pivotal year for research, development, and strategic planning. A choreographic R&D phase with national experts laid the creative foundation for future work, and a launch event at Mayflower Studios gathered stakeholders from across civic, business and cultural sectors.

Alongside this, two digital outputs and a bespoke website amplified the campaign’s advocacy reach. Notably, national recognition came via a feature on The One Show as part of the LET’S DANCE campaign, positioning The Big Movement as a bold new vision for how dance and men’s mental health intersect.

2. Co-Design and Community Voice at the Core

The Big Movement was shaped by local men from the very beginning, embedding co-creation at the heart of the process. Over 12 monthly steering group sessions, a core group of 20 men consistently contributed to shaping the programme’s identity, structure and engagement plan. This model ensured that the evolving programme was not just for men but with men, honouring lived experience and amplifying diverse voices. Bespoke adult dance sessions through The Collective offered an ongoing opportunity for men to engage physically, creatively, and socially.

3. Strategic Partnerships and Inclusive Growth

New city partners joined the movement Solent Mind, ManGang, Saints Foundation, Abri, Mayflower Studios and Mettricks. These collaborations span mental health, housing and culture, signalling a wide appetite for creative, preventative approaches to wellbeing. A unique workplace dance activation for men, delivered in partnership with a corporate business, pushed dance into new territory.

4. Mental Health and Movement Intertwined

The Big Movement is designed to support men’s mental health by combining creative expression with opportunities for connection and conversation. Alongside The Collective, 33 men engaged in community workshops, reaching groups including the Army Welfare Service in Marchwood, Abri residents in Mansbridge and offering accessible public tasters such as Let’s Dance.

Complementing these were 3 open-access social events that blended creativity, guest speakers and networking, ranging from a spoken word night for International Day of Happiness to a festive dinner and a talk on grief awareness. 27 individuals participated, with representation from 6 local partners and community organisations, creating welcoming spaces for dialogue and community-building.

A performance at the Southampton Christmas Light Switch-On marked the project’s first public moment to an audience of 4000, a symbol of what’s to come.

“We’re proud to be partnering with ZoieLogic Dance Theatre to provide more opportunities for men to move more for positive mental health, and take another step towards a world where anyone who is experiencing a mental health problem has access to the support they need”

Sally Arscott
CEO of Solent Mind
